Make a garden lantern with our FREE boat chart!

In issue 229 my Make it! column shows you how to create a simple beach-style lantern for your garden using an old jar and a cute sailing boat motif.

It's really easy to create this look and the lanterns look really sweet when you pop tea light candles in them... I've made three already!

You'll find all the instructions in my column on page 78, but if you haven't got your copy yet simply download the chart right here
to get started today.

If you don't fancy making a lantern why not download the chart anyway and use your imagination to create something else with it... you could make it into anything from a bookmark to a greetings card and because it's so dinky it's great for beginners too.

Issue 229 is on sale until the 12th August so don't miss out.

Until next time...

How to personalise our stylish wedding sampler...

If you've already tucked into issue 225 of CrossStitcher you'll have seen our stylish wedding sampler by Maria Diaz. It's subtle colouring means it's really easy to swap the shading of the flowers to perfectly suit the occasion.

For example if your bride is having a purple themed wedding, simply change the pink flowers in the design to purple ones. We've added a few examples to download here
to get you started - in lavender and peach.

If neither of these take your fancy then just print off the keys and have a browse down the thread aisle in your local craft shop and replace the shades we've chosen with whatever colour takes your fancy!

Just make sure you pick the same number of slightly lighter and darker shades to get the desired shading effect on the flowers but remember the flowers don't all have to be the same colour...

Easy peasy - a perfectly personalised wedding gift!

Make your Scottie dog purse from issue 217

If you've been inspired by the Doggy Bag project in CrossStitcher issue 217, you might want to make this purse to stitch one of Joanne Sanderson's Scotties onto.

You will need:
  • Silver bag clasp ref 512728 from Panduro
  • Backing fabric, one piece
  • Lining fabric, two pieces
Instructions:

1 Trace and cut around your purse template and tack this around your design to mark out the final size of the purse. Trim the fabric around your tacking line to leave at least 1cm excess for hemming. Now cut a piece of backing fabric to match.
2 Place the backing fabric and design right sides together and machine stitch around your tacking line from A to B, as marked on your template. Turn right sides out.
3 Trace around your lining template for the purse lining, and machine stitch together from A to B. Place inside your purse and then slip stitch the lining to the front and back of the purse.
4 The final step is to secure the purse to the bag clasp by stitching it to the punched holes running along the edge of the clasp. Add a few beads along this outer edge to decorate if you like.
